WA: Tributes for Aboriginal leader Glynis Sibosado
PERTH, April 20 AAP - Tributes flowed today for a prominent West Australian Aboriginal
leader who dedicated her life to social issues and reducing the number of indigenous people
in custody.
Glynis Sibosado, a former WA ATSIC commissioner, died on Wednesday after a long illness,
ATSIC said today.
Aboriginal leaders said the contributions of Mrs Sibosado, who was made an Officer
of the Order of Australia (OA) in September last year, had provided vital stepping stones
that the next generation would follow.
Mrs Sibosado had been a member of a range of government advisory councils and was ATSIC
WA's north-west zone commissioner for six years from 1993.
WA Attorney-General Jim McGinty said Mrs Sibosado was deeply committed to her community,
and showed this through the courage and positive energy she displayed despite her illness.
"Glynis Sibosado stood out as a champion for her people in a wide range of indigenous
issues such as justice, health, education, housing and domestic violence and welfare,"
Mr McGinty said.
ATSIC WA's north zone commissioner Eric Bedford said Mrs Sibosado was highly respected
for initiatives to reduce numbers of Aboriginal people in custody.
"Her compassion for others was legendary and she was a hero in the truest sense of
the word," Mr Bedford said.
Mr Bedford said Mrs Sibosado's commitment to her people remained unwavering despite
her struggles with illness.
