WA: Plan to give indigenous children better start to be unveiled
Indigenous children in Western Australia will benefit from a better start in life with
the development of a new culture specific plan based on Aboriginal learning cycles.
A group of Aboriginal mothers developed the new plan which will be unveiled today at
a workshop for national and state indigenous affairs representatives.
The Moving From Evidence To Action workshop will look at new ways governments and communities
can work together to overcome disadvantages experienced by indigenous children.
Aboriginal leaders BYE BYE SUNFLY and MELISSA BYE BYE will tell attendees older generations
need to share cultural activities and transfer their local knowledge to the younger generation
in their most formative years.
The women, from the remote Balgo and Yagga Yagga Aboriginal communities in the state's
far north, have been commended by child health experts and the state government for their
strategy.
